The 2023 VETERANS DAY CEREMONY held in Draper Memorial Park on Friday, November 10 featured many powerful moments, including music, prayers, speeches, and a wreath presentation, all focused on honoring the service and sacrifice of our veterans.
Peter Scandone, chairman of the Veterans Day Ceremony and Field of Flags, opened the morning’s ceremony. The Presentation of the Colors was done by members of the Italian-American War Veterans, Milford Post #40. A very moving and heartfelt opening prayer was heard by Rabbi Mendy Kivman, of the Chabad House Jewish Center in Milford. The Pledge of Allegiance was done by members of Girl Scout Troop 65217. High School senior Sophia McClay performed a beautiful rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner.”
Jo-Ann DeMaria Morgan, Chair of the Post 9/11 Memorial Committee and Veterans Advocate, recognized key veteran attendees. Speakers included Tim McDonough (USMC Veteran) and Michael Johnson (US Army Veteran and current Milford Police Officer). Each had humbling and moving personal messages. Captain Kevin Polito, Salvation Army of Greater Milford spoke about the history of the Salvation Army and local efforts to raise money for families in need, commending Field of Flags as a contributor in that effort.
The “US Armed Forces Medley” was performed by the Milford High School Marching Band as members of each military branch stood and raised a small flag. The closing prayer was done by Rev. Richard Scioli, Pastor at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. The Presentation of the Wreath was done by Waters Corporation Veterans Employee Resource Group.
Thank you to all who participated in this very moving tribute to all those who have answered the call to serve!
